Caregiving Hero Poem by Don Wendorf

Caregiving Hero

CAREGIVING HERO

Verses:
I dahwannabe a caregiving hero, just wanna be a slob.
Wanna cruise along at bare-living zero, just wanna be a blob.

I dahwannabe an inspiration, just wannna suck my thumb.
Wanna take me on a long vacation, just wanna beach my bum.
Chorus:

Caregiving takes care of all my nights and days,
I look heroic mostly ‘cause I fake it.
Want a job with accolades and glory, honor, praise?
I'd give it where and when you'd care to take it.

Verses:
I dahwannabe a caregiving saint- NO- just wanna be a sap.
Wanna schlep along with no constraint so, I can just take a nap.

I dahwannabe a caregiving hero, just wanna be retired.
Wanna fiddle like a Rome-burning Nero, just wanna get fired.

Chorus:
Caregiving brings out a ton of tears and fears,
I look so brave but doubt that I can make it.
Want a job with compliments and admiration, cheers?
I'd give it where and when you'd care to take it.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
While I liked the support and praise in being called a hero or saint or inspiration for my caregiving of my disabled wife, I also found it tough to have others or myself expect more of me than I was humanly able to deliver on. I wrote about this and other emotional struggles, to help other caregivers, in my recent book: Caregiver Carols: a Musical, Emotional Memoir
