Cancer

We don't know
How strong we are
Until being strong
Is the only choice
We have.

Why is it
That we have to be
Strong for others
When we have to be
Strong for ourselves?

Someone once said
'Winning isn't everything'
Well, they obviously
Never had
Cancer.

To lose your fight
Against cancer
Is to give in
To cancer
And die.

Though many are scared
Of this dreaded cell
Cancer is only a word
Not a whole
Sentence.

Just remember
You are not
Dying from cancer
You are living
With it.

Poet's Notes about The Poem

I wrote this poem about my dad, who has been fighting cancer for 6 years now. I edited a picture on photoshop and put some quotes on it, and I was staring at the picture and this poem just kinda flowed onto the page.

It's sad but I like it. I've known people with cancer and I've watched them pass because of it. But the one thing I admire about those people is the strength they had to fight it to the end. (Report) Reply

Poem of the Day

poet Emily Jane Brontë

I am the only being whose doom
No tongue would ask no eye would mourn
I never caused a thought of gloom
A smile of joy since I was born

In secret pleasure - secret tears
