Calling Card Poem by Sarah Elizabeth DuVal

Calling Card

In the darkness of the night
She walks alone to the place where they once met
Through the trees of the forest
Moonlight shines creating an eerie glow.
Reaching her destination
She sits down upon a stump and pulls a card from her pocket
Lost in memories, she notices not the cool breeze
Nor the figure who has appeared.
Keeping to the shadows
He watches her
Unsure of what to do.
Coming out of her memories
She looks up in the direction of the figure
Realizing he's been seen
The figure vanishes into the night
And in his spot leaves a card identical to the one the girl holds
Upon reaching the spot where she saw the figure
She kneels down and picks up the playing card
As she makes her way back home
She quietly turns the card over
And seeing the ace of clubs smiles to herself.
