Build On What Cannot Be Destroyed Poem by Rachel Henley

Build On What Cannot Be Destroyed

The cobwebs are just shadows,
of memories and people who used to play a part,
I swear there is life, even in the dark.
Paint your colours but I am the dream you chase.
Erase all that happened,
with the pretence of your current lover.
You can build here, demolish what we built.
The windows will no longer reflect.
but the grass will remember,
the apple tree won't forget.
Oh the pavement knows my tread!
and your heart resides in my head!

It does not matter what your lover builds,
work him like a slave, built over what we made,
I am the sun now, the new roof is just a shade.
