Breaking Away Poem by Anand Brown

Breaking Away

The day is new when I awake.
The young sun peeps curiously through my window.
Oft when I awake I think
The bridge between slovenly sleep and waking.
It puzzles me that two eyes closed in a fit of fatigue
Have no promise of opening once more.

The rest of the house is asleep
Like restful bodies on a premature grave.
I do not waste morning
And head off.

I see small children jumping and as they jump
They leave their offences on the ground
And graciously allow their innocent laughter to fill the air.
When they run, they run like blessings
And they smile with happy heart.

Now for the rolling hills
At the base of the mountain.
My piece of consecrated land
Hidden in the valley fron where my
Untamed and beastly joy rise up.

Here I can life my head
To the eastern mountain
From where my strength comes.
