Blue Wren In Sydney Poem by Danny Draper

Blue Wren In Sydney

Blue Wren living in my street
Tries inconspicuous but is hardly discrete
Amongst the sirens and screaming cars
Feathers flashy as any mug lair
With pretensions and cosmopolitan airs.
Thumping stereos pump the street
Droning Arabic music and
Waftings of halal meat,
People rushing everywhere
Consumed by self and self centered care
Save for predators, Blue Wren is there.
Flits his harem around the suburb
Absorbed by his polygamy and beauty
Anonymous but coveting obvious
Not looking in order to be noticed
In shrubs now as gardens sprawl
No bush, and it seems almost a pity
That you had to wait so long
To move into this city.

Note: Written 9/2/2004 for the beautiful little birds that grace my garden with their presence.
