Black And White (A Movie Poem) Poem by Julie Vognar

Black And White (A Movie Poem)

No death within a dappled grove
No 'Go; and bid the soldiers shoot'
No butterfly just out of reach
No captain, climbing with his flute-

Nor swinging in the children's swings
Nor line dance led by death, in vain
Nor love found with the loss of wings
Nor child's redemptive cry in rain-

Though birds shift course in glinting sun
And love appear in loved son's face
No sorrow's end, no joy begun
Can change the bent of your eyes' grace.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Julie Vognar 04 January 2012

When Ifirst wrote this poem, I tried to include only my very favorite movies, but i realized that some of them were ver4y obscure, so I changed the lines to include movies that I thought everyone should have seen, whether they had or not. I dearly love movies. Unfortunately, they're STILL pretty obscure-most of the people I asked had only recognized one movie apiece (though a friend who is a real movie buff-he's seen ever so many films more than I have-claimed to have recognized all of them) . It also occurred to me that if people got interested enough in trying to identify the movies, they might not notice the last two lines, and I thought that would be a good thing. Which is really pretty silly-writing a poem and hoping that no one will notice the last two lines!
