Birth Of A Black Hole Poem by Susan Williams

Birth Of A Black Hole

Rating: 5.0

.
Our world is
exhausted
to the core
weary
of
our children skipping merrily off to school
to learn how to die
weary
of
our protestations of love and if our boyfriends stop caring
we knife them 29 times slit their throats and shoot them in the head
our world is
exhausted
to the core
weary
of
our peace-loving religions vowing
to exterminate the unbelievers with meat cleavers
weary
of
our teeming companies swarming over the earth and
making huge profits
while dead bees no longer pollinate American farm crops
and the bread basket of the world dies
our world is
exhausted
weary to the core of us
tired of listening to us
lying and sighing
crying and dying
while we are flying blind on earth's back through space
where
dying stars detonate with a sensational explosion of light
as their core collapses
sending shock waves smashing and crashing headlong
ricocheting through space
but
we are not a dying star
no star are we, no glory have we
we are the cruel spurred riders of a dying staggering planet
wielding our lead-weighted whips and crops
slashing them into her earthen sides
flailing our Mother Earth driving her forward
blood-sucking leeches of the universe
we ride our groaning moaning planet
through the monumental silence of space
and somewhere in our orbit circling the sun
we will silently disappear
unnova ourselves
without a bang or a flash
from the universe
having reached the point of no return
we become a black hole
that light cannot pass through

Susan, This is magnificent, and the stuff of film noir. There is a case to be made that there is nothing darker, nothing more savage to the light than humanity. A great work.

Thank you for your complimentary remarks about this poem. Unfortunately, I think you are right when you say - - - -There is a case to be made that there is nothing darker, nothing more savage to the light than humanity. [you should place this on your poet page as a quotation- it's quite quotable]

Very significant n powerful work. The future of mankind is a big question mark. We have no idea where we are going. Our actions fail us. A sensitive view of the world from a poet's angle who feels more acutely than others the degeneration n the dehumanization that is becoming the norm. A thought-provoking piece.

Thank you for the comment that reveals that you too are concerned with the degeneration of man in regards to his own spiritual standards, in his egocentric treatment of others, in his relief for his ills being found more and more in bloodshed, in his ignorant arrogance toward the only home in this vast universe.

True Susan! most often, the poem takes hold of the writer and leads him through the paths it chooses to tread, whether it is down the ocean or into the space. Poet has little choice here.

Liked the recurring words and closure lines that make this poem more powerful and wonderful. Top Marks and to my favorites.

A powerful, incisive and meaningful poem. It brilliantly expresses and depicts the destructive ways and evilness of humanity.
