Best Bad Christmas Poem by Barry Van Allen

Best Bad Christmas

Rating: 5.0

Christmas is a special time of year,
a time for holding,
a time for knowing,
who is near and dear.

Christmas is the time to look at life,
so many get depressed,
as their lives come into view,
evaluating year to date,
... comparing old with new.

This year... an experiment,
a different point of view,
... NO gifts this time,
... NO red and green,
we're older now,
it does not mean...
what it did when we were kids.

She still believes a bearded man,
on some prehistoric snowmobile,
will be landing on our roof tonight,
... and somehow make his way,
beyond the furnace, through a narrow pipe,
with a bag of things for her.

His critters fly around the world,
and they do it in one night,
... I told her, ' It's not possible! ',
... science says it isn't right!

I convinced her it was stupid,
we didn't have to kill a tree,
to prove that we believed the myth,
that only children will believe,
... and it wasn't only me,
... that called it ' Humbug '!

I have not ever known '3 wise ',
that believed enough in anything,
to walk across the street,
to avoid their own demise,
without what they consider proper payment.

As smart as we were thinking that we were,
we both agreed, it wasn't close to feeling right,
and we won't do that again...
the next time Christmas rolls around.

I know this may sound silly,
and next year we may have doubt,
but, in a strange way it reminded us,
of what Christmas is about.

Barry, I understand the thought behind reducing Christmas to the barest minimum...in order to truly appreciate all that we really do have. Still though...I think that many of us need that magical time of year...it gives us one time once a year to truly believe...to be optimistic...to be thoughtful of others...to be our best. I know that you are probably thinking...hey...if you're on the ball..you should be that way all year long. How many of us really are though? ? We need that 'magic' as much as any vacation.: -) No skipping Christmas...no skipping Birthdays...or other holidays...: -) Hugs, Dee

Ah, Barry - this is much more diplomatic than the first version - LOL! You're not a humbug, afterall. Yes, I do believe children should be allowed to live the fantasy as long as possible, because that's part of childhood when ANYTHING is possible. But as adults, we do learn what the spirit of Christmas is all about - it's giving from the heart, not from the wallet. Beautifully done, my friend. Linda :)
