Before The Destined Day Poem by Venkateswaran Krishnan Sreenivasan

Before The Destined Day

None can stop me when it is time to go
I will forget the past but never forego
The transient pains and pleasures of today
That sweeten my life by their sway

I will win the battle, still lose the game
And face the world without shame
Swim in the seas against the wave
With faith in my Master me to save

I will feast on food, full and wholesome
And enjoy the run in the morning sun
Never once bide my time to come
To embrace sloth or work to shun

I will dwell amidst Nature’s beauteous bowers
Scented by her gorgeous flowers
And never aspire to be atop human towers
To lose my human sense and powers

Work is the very insignia of life
Selfless, it serves to soften its strife
This worship I will offer to my last breath
And pray to god to bestow health

I will work and earn for what I need
To live contended, not for my greed
I will give the surfeit to those who need
To satiate their hunger and the poor to feed

Dreams sneak in like thieves in the night
To break my sleep and steal my peace
Doomsday events dim the light
Of my mind that was always at ease

I will love all creatures and strive to hate none
And never feel high when the race is won
Never lose my poise in rise or praise
Earthly glory will vanish in a haze

I will look at other’s misery and mishaps
As my own and yearn to help and share
A worse fate might befall me perhaps
In the days to come and God will care

This earthly life for its toils and spoils known
Is better lived through to suffer and die
Than skip and long for the heavens unknown
With dreams to fly forever high

To serve God’s creatures however small
With our blood and sweat to soothe them all
Is a unique blessing showered on man
All through his life as long as we can
