Beach Poem by Mehreen Mujeeb

Beach

His scaly skin grew gills
As he drowned in saline tears
He swam across the tears fast
But could not surface his own fears.

He used to live on the ground
The sunlight refracted through his hair
His lungs could breathe the breeze
He walked and the floor didn’t tear.

He swam and walked
But he never did reach
He couldn’t choose where to stop
He could never surface the beach.
