Baby In The Drain Poem by Anand Brown

Baby In The Drain

Rating: 5.0

Girl and boy in a ball.
In pleasure and ecstasy they move from wall to wall.
She rests her head upon his chest.
Their passionate action done,
She needs rest.

He leaves as quiet as he came.
His sweet words were not in vain.
She had grown tired of condemnation.
He replaces that with sheer elation.

Her cycle lost and worst fears realized.
'I am pregnant', he is utterly surprised.
He disappears she is alone and pushed away.
Now stomach full she must push in dismay.

One nights play gave birth to this day.

Not tears of joy in the moment.
She runs to water for it acts as a solvent.
The squirming baby her disgrace in town.
Dont cry baby, please in silence drown.

Streets are filled with sewerage, there is a block.
They move to seek the problem in a hurry they flock!
Drain opened, they cannot fathom the sight and the pain.
A woman screams there is a baby in the drain!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Based on a true story of a drained being blocked because a desperate mother flushed her infant down the toilet. I wrote minutes after I saw the poor thing lay lifeless in the drain.
