Axolotl Poem by Ima Ryma

Axolotl

Rating: 3.5

An axolotl I am named.
I live in Lake Xochimilco.
To the Aztecs, I was quite famed
As god Xolotl - doncha know,
Became this salamander to
Elude an ordered sacrifice
By other gods, as gods do do.
And for a while, this ruse worked nice.
Then the Aztecs noticed that I
Could bodily regenerate.
So guess who got hunted and why!
Sacrifice to gods was my fate.

The Aztecs prayed to the heal god,
Then served me up and ate my bod.
