Automaton Poem by Michael Walker

Automaton

Rating: 5.0

I am not an automaton,
I am not a robot,
I do not move by a baton
At if, then, and, nor but.

I eat and sleep, I wake and rise,
I work, and pray, and play,
But show me a machine that cries,
And that will be the day.

I live and give, I love and laugh,
I build, and fight, and climb,
While calculators only graph
Without reason or rhyme.

Nice poem. It does well to bring robots face to face with human beings. Howsoever complex, robots can't beat humans in terms of reasoning and inventive ways. I appreciate it, Michael.

An interesting and very good poem, Michael, written right on the heels of my having just watched the movie Bicentennial Man, starring Robin Williams and Sam Neill. This movie was based on a novel by Isaac Asimov, and was about a robot with feelings, who cried, and who ultimately became human. That's why I read your poem!
