Augustine's Lesson - Man Meets An Angel Poem by Marton Dezso

Augustine's Lesson - Man Meets An Angel

Rating: 2.8

Each day I walk down
to the the seashore,
watching the rising sun
my eyes tired, burning mirrors.

Thinking about the same things
as I stand there.
And I haven't found out anything yet,
no matter how hard I think
or how hard I force my mind
only the sun's morning light
I seem to understand.

But yesterday I saw a little boy,
in the sand he dug a little hole
with a seashell he was bringing
water and put it into that hole.
Running up and down
between water and the sand
over and over again.

'What are you doing? ' I asked
'See, I'm pouring' he said
'the entire ocean into this hole.'

'You can't do it, no.
For the sea is mighty you know,
Too tiny for it is your hole'

And he said:
'Well I saw you before and I tell you:
the day you
understand
what you came to,
the sea will be
already in that hole.'

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Very philosophical writing Marton. You have used the sea theme as a backdropp for your simple yet brilliant story on our experiences in life. It is like a fable and the depth and power of the sea works so well. I feel we are all creating our own reality by all the experiences we have in life. When we finally understand the lesson we were given to work and understand, the experience may have passed. However, we can then use it for a similar situation which can come our way again and work through it in a different way...10 Karin Anderson
