Assignation At The Masquerade

ASSIGNATION

All chances were took to save every penny
all put by for this very day,
my ticket I did book on the
Orient Express, where I would be
bound for the City of Venice.
City of Dreams maybe romance and gondola rides.
Passing under the famously ornate Bridge of Sighs.
Such excitement, I could barely contain, as I with case
boarded the train.
Shown to my table sumptuously laid for evening tea.
Starched napkins, fresh flowers with silver cutlery.
Plumpest plums, juiciest straws, sushi served with fish so raw.
A dropp of red glug glugged from the neck of the bulbous bottle
I thought ‘What the heck’ sit and be spoiled.
The service was splendid, all manner of delicacy to me was rendered.
Through curtained windows, I gazed at the scenery passed
‘Oh pinch me’ for this sweet memory to last,
Such a dream I slept that night, breakfast on the morrow
Venice nearly in my sight.
As soon as I disembarked I was whisked away,
For five star treatment at the Hotel Boulez.
Lit by a street lamp casting golden glow, I wondered
if the real Venice was the same one that I know.
Well, it was more…
The masqued Carnevale at the ball
began behind pillars and balustrades
Just for one night we could be anything we liked
enigmatically poised painted grin,
fan in hand. Arias and San Marcos’ bells rang
breathtakingly twin.
Hidden veiled rich display of opulence frayed.
Streamers in orange and blue glided down the staircase in
fur muffed sleeves, through this reality adoring glances
in the naked light so many people drinking, speaking, allure.
Echoes through the walls magnetically draw.
My heart quickened this is where I had dreamed, my eyes
glistened sparkles to match the crystal chandelier.
My masked marauder handed me an unopened note
facial distort so diverse but with complete discretion..
before I left one last look at the narrow lagoons rippling waters
quietly lap lapping peaceful air pervades but Venice was no charade
all before my vision regaled..
as the train chugged on its way, the unopened letter held a sway
tumbling out from of the page petals strewn upon the floor.
As I glanced and caught the eye of someone that I’d seen before
A hand reached out with petals a sprinkling
Eyes that misted now were twinkling
Although he was masked I’d remembered his touch
‘Is it you’ breathed I barely hushed
‘yes, it’s me’
T’was really all it was meant to be
