Asking For A Smile

You walk by me every day
but you don't even look my way
I don't want your money,
I'm not asking for your time,
I'm not asking for a dime,
I'm just asking for a smile.

I tried to smile at you,
but I think I've forgotten how to
you see, it's not that I don't care about you,
or that I don't have the time
I just haven't laughed for a while,
I've forgotten how to smile.

You see, people walk by me every day
and they just turn their heads away
they don't have time for me
they don't give a dime
I'm not asking them to cry,
I'm just asking for a smile.

Baby, people walk by me everyday,
but you wouldn't turn your head away,
you wouldn't turn a heart away
oh, baby, I'm not asking for your time,
I don't need to be part of your life,
I'm just asking for a smile.

I just need to know that somebody cares
that somebody else is really out there
that this road really leads somewhere,
I'm not trying to hitchhike,
I'm not trying to hitch a ride,
I'm just asking for a smile.

Oh baby, please give me a smile,
Oh baby, I'm really trying,
but what mountain am I climbing
'cause everybody's scowling,
baby, be my mountain
help me smile again.

Oh baby, people walk by me everyday,
but you're the only one I really need
you're the only one who can rescue me
'Cause you're the only one who's really sweet inside,
you're the only thing good in this life
baby, I'm just asking for a smile.

poet Emily Jane Brontë

I am the only being whose doom
No tongue would ask no eye would mourn
I never caused a thought of gloom
A smile of joy since I was born

In secret pleasure - secret tears
