Ash Wednesday Poem by Michael Walker

Ash Wednesday

Rating: 5.0

A friend's deceit exceeds a foe's disdain,
As night betrays the dawning of the day,
And day gives way to what clouds shall ordain,
As we receive just that for which we pray.

Must we choose 'twixt kith and kin - and truth -
Or can we find our lives within our loves?
Death shall come to birth from breath of youth,
Like rushing wings of mourning turtle-doves.

Dust we are, to dust we shall return!
And yet we yield to pleasures of the flesh,
Although the ashes beckon us to burn,
That with Christ on the Cross our souls may mesh.

May we be unto Thee as Thou wouldst wilt,
For only Thou canst call us forth from silt,
And only Thou canst save us from our guilt.

'May we be unto Thee as Thou wouldst wilt, For only Thou canst call us forth from silt, And only Thou canst save us from our guilt.' It is extremely pleasing to find a poet who writes verses with such formal language.. The final lines of your poems that I felt compelled to quote are indeed worth fine quality. You have written a fine poem, dear Luc. Thank you for sharing. And of course, a full 10 points from me...

Bless you, Souren. Your kind words mean much to me. I am gratified that you enjoyed my verses, and I look forward to reading yours. Although archaic language is out of fashion nowadays, one cannot go wrong in imitating Shakespeare.
