As You Laid There Poem by GJG Elton

As You Laid There

As you laid there,
from the shadows I was drawn to your side.
I watched you
as you fought your way back
from your life-threatening sleep.

I slowly, and gently traced your perfect smile,
while recalling memories of the stars in your now shuttered eyes,
as I caressed every flowing curl,
that beautifully framed your injured mind.

Repeatedly I tried to sleep,
but the sound of your labored breathing
drew me to your side again, and again.

I could not resist
love's magic which tugged
at my heartstrings
and brought me to your side.

I hid in the shadows
once again,
back against the wall, reaching out
to hold your hand in mine.

As you laid there
I fell in love with you, over, and over, and over again.
