As The North Wind Blows Poem by Juan Olivarez

As The North Wind Blows

Rating: 5.0

As the north wind blows,
Leaves flutter lifeless to the ground.
Lying in endless makeshift graves,
All around,
Returning their souls, to old mother Earth.

As the north wind blows,
In a hidden glade, two tiny fawns stand for the first time,
On weak unsteady legs.
Stretching their heads, to suckle the warm,
Life giving milk from their mother,

As the north wind blows,
The Monarch butterflies, start their ill fated journey,
Of thousands of miles.
Dancing their way south, through the skies,
To their eventual demise.

As the north wind blows,
The new born cottontails, peek out from their burrow,
Already greased lightening, They amble out,
Into the open glade, and dash back again,
Gaining confidence daily.

As the north wind blows,
The Rio Grande Perch, start for deeper water.
Swimming slower, and slower now.
But with plenty of crickets in their bellies,
To warm their cold blood.

As the north wind blows,
Rain freezes on the grasses of the glade,
A thin sheet of ice now covers the pond,
The long sleep has arrived.
As the north wind blows.
