As Stories Go Poem by Lee Gelis

As Stories Go

I ask myself what it would be like
To write a story about myself;
Then I realize that my life is not that interesting.
I don't exactly know how to write
A story about nothing.
What? Do you think you're important? I say.
Do you think every time you stand there
All stoic and filled with emotion
That there is some sad music playing in a montage?
Do you think that your daily struggles
Of social apathy and mounting to-do lists
Make for a good story?
When it's all said and through, do you think
There will be a book or a film
About this point in your life that's so uncritical?
What is it with you and being important?
At this point I realize I've been talking to myself
And resign to lesser tasks.
At least I am not depressed, I say.
I take my melatonin, and prepare
For a long wait until sleep finds me;
Music in my head.
