Are Carats Life? Poem by Paul WilsonSuffield

Are Carats Life?

Time does press down from above
Evolution forcing time into a symbol of love.
Dinosaurs, Ice, Apes, Neolithic man
Crushed together, then worn on one hand.
How many lives does it take to make a fortune?
How many dawns and midnight full moons?
Frosted, dirty, filled with flaws
Just one highly polished opens all doors.
Blood sweat and tears, miles below the sky
Dug for, stolen, bought and sold, for why?
To adorn the digits of the wealthy and fair
To sparkle like stars, or glisten like hair.
These tear drops of the heart, frozen in time
Starting over again from the back of the line
