Anyone, Everyone's Son Poem by jerry hughes

Anyone, Everyone's Son

He was anyone, everyone's son.
A splendid, strapping lad
with a smile to make an angel blush;
So innocent, shy and wide.

There was goodness in his every gesture,
and in every stride of his bold step;
As he marched off with his regiment
to a war not of his making, but he went.

Without complaint he went, believing
it was his duty to fight beside his mates;
Even if the odds were great, as they died
in their thousands like slaughtered sheep.

Sheltered by the Somme in an unmarked grave
where memory saves forgetfulness, that, and his
final letter are all that remain of anyone, everyone's son.

I pray for the day when when we don't have to write tributes to comfort us for the loss of life in war...you state it eloquently...Coach

Your poem personalizes those 'sons' who went off 'for an adventure', 'to see the world', to escape from the dreariness of life at home. I often wonder how I could have coped, had I received one of those telegrams... Your poem keeps their spirit alive and reminds us all that war is a dirty cruel business where the only winners are those in suits. love, Allie ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

You speak to the heart of a morally bankrupt enterprise....criminally inspired!

This poem I can relate too. War is dreadful, horrible, nasty work...But i still pray for the soldiers everyday. ~The Little Blue Bird~

My dad survived The Somme but two of his brothers are still there. I guess that's what A Brightly Coloured Parrot is about 10

I, as a woman think, if I don't watch war, hear about war, it will go away. I HATE WAR! Have you read Ridge Cahill's poems on this site? They tear my heart in two. Good on you Jerry! Up with your poetry and down with war! Karin Anderson
