Another Seed Is Planted Poem by Marcus McKinley

Another Seed Is Planted

Sun intense
Beads of sweat
Contemplating
On furrowed brow
Tethered wrist to wrist
You resist
But, not for long…

In a hole
Dug by your hands
You stand
Buried in earth
To the neck

Match stick
Broken in two
Pressed tight
Between eyelids
Held open
You will bear witness

To the west
Is where you face
To watch the setting sun
To the north a row of trees
Upon a skull, each one
Baring the fruits of death
How many days will you last?
The seed takes root through breath
Sustains new growth through bast

A warning to all reads

Those before and those to come
Will germinate the earth one by one
Reforestation has begun
