And Why The Poor Grow Poorer Poem by Francis Duggan

And Why The Poor Grow Poorer

Rating: 2.0

it is the so called Season of carols by candlelight
And carol singers in the park are singing silent night
And other hymns for Christmas and songs of peace and joy
And why the poor grow poorer i really wonder why? .

And why the poor grow poorer i do not understand
This is 'The Lucky Country' the so called prosperous Land
Yet Helen in her seventies for her meal on Christmas Day
Will call into MacDonalds for five dollar take away.

From pension day to pension day she struggle to pay rent
This frail and ageing woman in need of every cent
Some may say the 'Lucky Country' for some lucky maybe
And too few give recognition to the hidden poverty

Joe is having a Christmas party in his big house on Blackwood Height
And you won't find any poor there only his wealthy mates he did invite
His dogs better fed and treated than many people are
And the social gap keeps widening when it had already stretched too far.

It's coming up to Christmas just a few days to Christmas Day
And the carol singers singing in the park across the way
Still the gap between the rich and poor as ever seem to grow
And why the poor get poorer is something I'd like to know? .
