And Then I Looked Up Poem by Mazwi Sedibe

And Then I Looked Up

When my shoulders were hanging low.
My head steady facing toe.
Pocketed hands collected in my nude.
All forces pulling down,
And then I looked up.

I was slowly jogging down
The corner of bereavement and grief.
After losing three women in three weeks

One of which failed to open her eyes
Again from her ephemeral ailment bed.
One was just mute with a speaking mouth,
Or just never too courageous to communicate
And the other‘s mouth
Was habitually contrary to her goings.

And just before I turned into suicide lane.
I looked up the high Hummocks,
Where my help came empty handed.
I looked inside my life's tool kit,
And found no spanners and no spares
To fix a broken life that's stranded.

I searched and searched,
All the bents and edges of my life
And still found no saviour,
But just a saviour's love.

And then I looked up
And heard his incessant promise,
You are not a mistake, yes
Your life is not for you to take, yes
And this emotional war is for me to partake, yes

I then looked down,
And I was reminded
That I forget to look back.
As I turned my back to the present,
I saw my flaws burning down to ashes.
I saw healing and recovery taking its place on my gashes.
I turned my back to the past,
And the future revealed all the rough patches
That I will still have to go through,
And then I looked up,
With thanks giving to the life-giver man
For there is now a purpose and there is a plan
