Ancients Poem by Paul Butters

Ancients

For over twenty thousand years
Countless kings and queens have built
Magnificent citadels
And metropolitan cities.
No end of grandeur:
Of palaces and temples,
And columnated architecture.

Like ants their multitudes have milled
Along the roads
To many a market square.
All worshipping royalty,
And every kind of God.

Our boffins claim our civilisations date back
To seven thousand years or so at most.
But many question that.
Many an ancient city swallowed
When last an ice age ended
And the sea-level rose.

The so-called myths of Noah
And Atlantis
Are testament to those floods.
The Seven Wonders of The World,
Stonehenge
And other megalithic monuments
Show knowledge of the skies:
Astronomical wisdom
Sagely gained.

Humanity may be humble,
But we must acknowledge
Our legacy was longer lived
Than many a man
Or woman
Might dream.
