An Ode To Mediocrity Poem by Biswajit Basu

An Ode To Mediocrity

I am a mediocre guy and I am not being sarcastic,
I have never done anything spectacular or even mildly drastic.
Of experience I have a lot and it is normal that I should,
I have full experience in failing, having failed every way I could.

In mediocrity I was born,
In mediocrity I shall die,
In mediocrity I have full faith,
To be more mediocre, I shall always try.

Women are great at multi-tasking, while men can do but one,
But I am a zero-tasker and I definitely have more fun.
For everyone I am a yes man, to bosses and customers too,
Price Lists and invoices never match but that’s for others to rue.

In mediocrity I was born,
In mediocrity I shall die,
In mediocrity I have full faith,
To be more mediocre, I shall always try.

They sent me to training courses to improve my communication skills,
While dozing everyday in class at night I was sozzled to the gills.
I soon learnt that health came first and never to sacrifice it for success,
Ultimately you must reconcile more or less to the fact that more is less.

In mediocrity I was born,
In mediocrity I shall die,
In mediocrity I have full faith,
To be more mediocre, I shall always try.

But there were times when my colleagues wondered just how,
I survived when the curtains closed and I should have taken a bow
Actually, I never entered the rat-race, always staying very small,
I deliberately chopped off my own wings and learnt the way to crawl,

In mediocrity I was born,
In mediocrity I shall die,
In mediocrity I have full faith,
To be more mediocre, I shall always try.

At this point it must sound intriguing and you wonder how I keep my job,
Actually it’s quite simple if you know how to manage your gob.
Never say anything creative or original thus never be in the limelight,
Whether things go right or they go wrong, you are never in the fight.

In mediocrity I was born,
In mediocrity I shall die,
In mediocrity I have full faith,
To be more mediocre, I shall always try.
