An Institution Thing Poem by John Carter Brown

An Institution Thing

People talk of a certain thing
As being an Institution,
But what exactly is this thing?
I offer my definition:

An Institution is a thing
That lots of people do,
Safe in knowledge that
People in the past
Did the same thing too;

The communal wish being that
People will do the same thing
Every coming year,
Thus preserving the thing
In perpetuity... is that clear?

An interesting reflection, John. I'm glad you put your mind to these weighty matters. Institutions tend to be so boring they pass unnoticed in the colour and 'fluff' of life - which may be their aim. British news is full of institutions - NHS, BBC, yawn! But some institutions are welcome: a nice pot of tea... Inspector Montalbano on Sat nights...

An institution is a living organism like all living organisms it wants to propagate itself. Its original purpose was to serve the people like the BBC or Local Council now they are self serving they have been there that long that the have the honour of being called an 'institution'. I agree with Ruth Bah humbug grrrrrrrrr; 0) But I liked your definition too 10/10 BB

An institution is any structure or mechanism of social order and cooperation governing the behaviour of a set of individuals within a given community — may it be human or a specific animal one. Institutions are identified with a social purpose, transcending individuals and intentions by mediating the rules that govern cooperative living behaviour which is why I don't like them......Bah humbug grrrrrrrrr ;)
