An Honest Despot Poem by Alem Hailu Gabre Kristos

An Honest Despot

Donning a high flown robe of democracy,
Hypocrites barefacedly tout autocracy!

Alas, a snake in the grass!

'Despot, if you
Serve as a jug and bottle or a parrot,
Materialize you could your wont.
Go ahead, with a bloody iron fist,
Squash people's movement any,
To reshape their destiny!
For arresting and deflating riot,
Worry not about the armament,
Under the guise of
Aid to development
And rampant drought,
Succours to you we shall underwrite.

With alacrity if you
Serve us a Trojan horse,
And permit us
To siphon your country's resource,
We shall bless your reign of course!

To your
Petty acts of genocide
And corruption,
We shall give little or
No attention!
'The all-accounting court
Must not cross your mind,
Come on
It is not for honest despots of
Your kind! '

Alas, a snake in the grass!

'But as a man of the people dear
To our dictates not giving ear,
If you try to err
From our road map,
If you attempt to flinch
An inch,
The holiness you preach-
In our nostril a stench-
Signals to us a conduct breach
Which begs for a pinch!

The democracy we tailor out
Is a straitjacket
That keeps
With modern trends abreast,
Never try to grow out of it
Don't be foolishly bold,
Do what you are told!
Don't you see
With your home-made outfit,
You look unkempt? '
'We hail from a special race,
Our linage to trace
Our ancestors were
Predators, slave owners
Colonizers and neo-colonizers!

Their successors,
we are globalizes- all-izers!
Thus we deserve
A higher place
In the power race!

You are not allowed
With us to catch up
And keep pace,
Slacken your defence,
Simply live by
Nuclear tappers grace!

Alas a snake in the grass!

Lo and behold
The revolutions
The world watches agape,
Are shedding light on the need
To change the political landscape!
The fraternity and
Self-esteem spark
Freedom icons ignited,
We have to pursue united!

Freedom icons like Mandela
What is more Nkrumah
When we commemorate,
This let us not forget!
