Americans Poem by Darwin Henry Beuning

Americans

Rating: 4.7

While vacationing in Thailand
A short time ago
Touring a temple
Where all the monks go

While visiting with a Frenchman
I perchance had met
After many pleasantries
He had to laugh

Explaining, you Americans
Are such a funny lot
Being overly optimistic
In the worst of spots

You Americans
See things so bright
When there is nothing
But the darkest night

He waited for a response
From one who should know
But all I did was smile
Until it was time to go

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This happened in 2010 while visiting a mountain top Buddhist temple in Nakhon Sawan. I did not have a response for him that day and I still don't know quite what to say.

just had a dander among your poems Hank, to lighten a winter's evening, and the thought that was coming together from each picture sort of came together in this wry poem, (apart from the Trump approval one....we'll disagree on that one) . Trust that all is well with you and yours. Barney

Nice. My response might have been something like Isn't it better to see the bright side of things? We can choose to be happy, so why shouldn't we?
