American Senryu Poem by Michael Pruchnicki

American Senryu

Rating: 2.8

God's warrior fond
of roast pigeon
on rye

hobo jungle
'No man below the salt'

jew and gentile
pass the muscatel

city sparrows call
'Come and get it!
Free seed for all! '

eve of Christ's mass
downtown Phoenix

owl-eyed sister
pavement penitent
a wilted flower

lost souls
sing carols
'Got a dollar? '

cops in black & whites
hustle whores and bums
mojado & gringo

life's a bitch
then you die
pendejo!

According to Wikipedia, your 'cynical or darkly humorous' three liners fit the definition of Senryu. You add American idioms to original comparisons and contrasts. Tom
