Amchi Hyderabad Poem by Anu Veluri

Amchi Hyderabad

A surprising cloudburst on the land of the Nizam and lo! All the traffic gets stuck
Some curse fate, some sense bad luck, the surroundings in seconds, become an absolute yuck! !

My auto squeezed forth inch by inch, the stink from the uncovered flowing drainage, Jeez Kills!
Hey, I am not in a slum, mind you, strangely in the posh Banjara Hills!

The roller coaster shakes me violently; I feel being transported to Purgatario
Retaining cool, planning broader become extinct in such a scenario

Bumps and creaks, swerves and eeks I reach a place that would put to shame the Pandemonium
Ah! Not to mention it’s the busiest and craziest part of the city- ‘Mehdipatnam’

We turn to get floating on the meandering Ring road
Famous it is for sending the innocent to their heavenly abode

The chassis of the jinxed flyover sings a haunting political ballad
Underneath and all around, in hills and mounds, gravel, marble, stone, mud, pebble
Constitute a neglected architectural salad

Sane becomes insane by the time he nears Hyderguda
The life on chaotic roads is then he feels less good than a peaceful death in Bermuda

Alas! My auto suddenly sinks into a deep puddle, assuming an arabesque posture, on the brink to overturn
I close my eyes and pray: God, if I vanish take care of my children

Enervated and emaciated, however out of danger, I reach Rajendra Nagar
Phew! Of many abstract pleasures I lose for the day, is certainly the spice in life’s vigor

The beautiful become ugly, good-bad, civilized-barbaric on the roads of Hyderabad!
Her despicable viscera is veneered by a sophisticated yet deceitful hi-tech facade! !
