Alone Poem by Ted Middleton

Alone

Alone

There's a house full of laughter - the family I love
The views in the distance and tall trees above
I hear music and movement - the bounce of a ball
The splashing and gurgle from the pool water fall

Worked hard hours and long - its all been worthwhile
To spend time with family - just seeing them smile
Relaxing and close to the ones I adore
So complete and content - I could ask for no more

But these are just memories that come and dont last
As I desperately strive to re-enter this past
To a time I recall that was so full of bliss
To a time I prefer thats much better than this

To once more be with them and feel all aglow
To tell them I love them - I'd never let go
To be rid of this empty, that tears at my heart
Just to be back together and not have to part

But starkest reality - puts thoughts to flight
Sweet daytime reflections are banished to night
And fate has no mercy as history has shown
Now I know what its like to be here all alone

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I guess this was a long time coming and written with full melancholy.

Picture a man in good health and position who has worked very hard
for fiteen years to achieve what he has. He has worked such long
hours that he practically missed his 14 year old and nine year old
girls growing up and was now experiencing the great pleasure of
spending all the time he wanted with them.

They had a farm, horses, pets, cattle, no debts and much more, but
most importantly, they had each other and were a close family with
a bright future.

Within ten years the eldest girl had developed a lung infection and
passed away, the wife has died from cancer, the wifes family have
tried to tear the surviving girls inheritance from her and cost the
estate $50,000 for wasted legal costs and the husband now lives
alone in Brisbane as his daughter has moved interstate.

Phew! That should be a good preparation for you to fully appreciate
'Alone'
