All You Ever Want To Know Poem by Isabelle Parkes

All You Ever Want To Know

The rain comes down hard but you choose to get wet
So another doesn’t have to feel cold,
You deserve so much more but you take what you get;
The dirt so she possesses the gold.
Your fingers are numb and you’re losing your grip,
But you still try to maintain your hold,
On your life and your world, but the weight makes it tip,
You’d die so she never grows old.

You fill in the blanks so she makes it make sense,
And pray vainly she is never confused;
The killer within is released in full strength
Should you hear of an unjust abuse;
You protect her with all of whatever is left
Of the fight that has gone with misuse,
You stick out your neck and you take all the blame
And don’t care if it will be of no use.

Try calming a fire that refuses to stop
In the hope it will come to an end,
Or reach the end of the road or the tip of the top
And keep hoping for rise or a bend,
All so she sees she can like it or not
And her dreams and beliefs you’ll defend,
Until your own are so fake that they won’t even rot;
They sit with letters you wish you could send.

You give her your voice so she can continue to plea
When you’re not finished with those of your own,
You cover her eyes so she won’t have to see
The reaping of what she has sown,
You pick all the stars and light up her world
In an array of colours and tone,
You write down her mind and study her soul
And memorize all that she’s known.

You catch all her tears so they don’t hit the ground
And make the world think that they never fell;
If your world is the magic and your life the unfound
Then her beauty and grace is the spell.
Thoughts of leaving are gone and you will stick around,
You repeat it to all that you tell;
You’re floating on air, miles up from the ground,
You’re in love and you know it so well.
