Treasure Island

Emmanuel George Cefai

(12th March 1955 / Victoria, Gozo)

Ah ivory, ivory

ah ivory, ivory
shines like the sun
and therefore loves
the mid-day ecstasy of wine
and lazy afternoons
and siestas.

But ebony
Ah ebony
Shines in the night
When the soft night uncovers the soft winds
That liberated thus
Over the sleeping port they blow:

There is a happiness in grief
And in the night
Your beauty of ebony shines bright

"Arcturus" is his other name—
I'd rather call him "Star."
