After An Unfortunate Incident Poem by Morgan Michaels

After An Unfortunate Incident

Rating: 5.0

Gray bird with the iron-red tail
I like you better than morning
True, you are less colorful but more talkative-
though certainly messier.
Over time we've come to understand each other.

But don't (as you did!) eat money
found in your ramblings, your quick, choppy flights-
Money that vanishes soon enough
Money we both need to live-
What's the deal? It's not like you're unfed.

Chew the cord, if you like. Get a shock,
if that's what you want. Chew
your feathers, your nails, your pricey toys,
the frames, the furniture, anything! ,
but don't eat vital money.

When you next go swinging
one four-toed claw before the other
following your beak like a witching wand
toward some tasty denomination-
(when did you get such expensive tastes)

Think! 'The morning has gold in its mouth'
doesn't apply to you. Gold isn't green.
It's just an expression.
And so it does. But it's not for you-
that's where the message ends.
