when she was little she would dream

of a house not so quiet

and of a family not so broken

now she stares out at the waves

crashing along the shore

crashing against the rocks

and she remembers the

darkness of the shadow in

the doorway

she remembers the weight of the shadow

on her body and on her soul

she wonders now

if this next wave

crashing against the shore

crashing against the rocks

will deliver her.
