A Word to Our Youth

Pants hanging low don’t make you cool
It’s a silly fad that screams fool
A foul mouth may resound loud
Have you standing out in a crowd
But only small minds use this technique
A dictionary contains many proper words so choose them wisely before you speak
Sure you have game on the court
From head to toe, nothing but millionaires you sport
Thinking you’re the shit
But if you sniff like everyone else you to will smell it
Being a class clown is your rep
You crush your image with each step
All the while thinking good grades are for nerds
However a 1.0 GPA is truly absurd
You’re blind to the truth and can’t see
That none of this is who you have to be
Dare to be different from the norm
Grab ahold of life and take the world by storm
You possess the greatest and most powerful tool
A mind, so use it wisely and excel in school
For we know a mind is a terrible thing to waste
So feed it, nourish it slowly and not in haste
Reading sparks the imagination
Studying builds a firm foundation
Using proper manners needs no translation
Being a follower only creates frustration
Whereas a leader emits liberation
Open your blinded eyes and see
A quality education is the key
And endless are its possibilities
Its trip will take you far
If you just realize and see who you truly are
Use that mind to shine like a star
And no matter how far it may seem
Success is the substance of dreams
Dreams can become real
Just focus, work hard and believe
The first step is the beginning to achieve
Faith is the key that unlocks the door
God gave you a mind, so spread your wings and soar.

Poem of the Day

poet Pablo Neruda

I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
