A Warm Day On The Gold Coast Poem by Francis Duggan

A Warm Day On The Gold Coast

Northern New South Wales and South Queensland referred to as the sub tropics
If this be so the tropics not for me
For nine months of the year these places warm
Depends on how warm you like it to be.

Yet you ask one who comes from a colder climate
And it's more likely that he or she will say
That they find the sub tropics far too warm
And in such places for long spells could not stay.

I've never been further north than southern Queensland
Noosa Heads as far north as I can recall
But I've heard it said that in Cairns the big Town in the tropics
The weather there much warmer overall.

The green male figbirds all day long are singing
Their distinct notes have a familiar ring
And lorikeets are chirping in the sunshine
And it's warm for the second day of Spring.

On the Gold Coast in the Queensland sub tropics
The cuckoo shrike pipes on the coral tree
I've heard it said that further north it's warmer
If this be so the tropics not for me.
