A Voice Of Reason Poem by Efren Petalver Carranza

A Voice Of Reason

Rating: 4.5

As I fiddled her words from the start
Her intellectual voice cried out loud
That tore my heart and fall apart
For this little town to make us proud

Her bravery makes sense to listen
Straight forward without hesitation
To the point that CHANGE is a must
For NEW officials whom they can trust

Hear! Here, I repeat what she uttered
Life of her and the people she cared
Poor of the poorest to walk on a road
Unpaved yet a promise wasn't fulfilled

On a rusted playground, no child is safe
Unclean restrooms, they hover bad whiff
"What must be done? " She questioned them
"What's in their pocket if not gold of shame? "

Boy, Oh! Boy I was once about your age
In this little town during in its "Dark Age"
Glaring lamp lights on every little shack
You're better off now than 40 years back

If progress counts, electricity isn't enough
When it lit a building tattering paint in half
Wells no more but the pipelines run through
Beneath the water waste, what a filth to view!

So, we beg you not to stop your Voice of Reason
For no truth hurts when hope becomes a lesson
To learn and relearn that CHANGE may happen
When everyone give these NEW a better chance!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem is dedicated to a young woman in our town in the Philippines who has a Voice of Reason for Change and Progress.

Change and Progress: My Political Point of View

Change occurs when everyone unites and commits to work together with common respect and understanding to weigh the pun of right and wrong. Change does not depend upon the level of one's education as manipulators but to leaders who are willing to accept the things that do not work and spare their ears to listen to the feedbacks of the opponents. While some can hardly take defeat and rejections, they should remain as contributors/supporters than as stubborn objectors of the proposed change. Since CHANGE is a continual process of elimination, change means to bring in NEW leaders or members to contribute their new ideas - not only what they had showcased to gain positions - but to allow their every chance to make it work. Progress can only be achieved when there is cooperation amongst us to make it real. And reality is an accomplishment of CHANGE. Change is not a hope; it is not a dream; it is an action from start yet and endless work of good ethics provided by full trust and honesty.

I prefer the word progressing than progressed or will progress. For me, when towns are progressing, it is from and beyond the non-stoppable good works, good intentions, and good deeds of good leaders. Unfairly to see that only the leaders are progressing in life, who are busy of becoming wealthier, than their tattered towns abandoned and losing its pride and pride of its residents. Unsure if I am numb by being poor or some of my likeness feels or thinks the same way, but there's one young brave woman who inspired me to write: "A Voice Reason" to deliver same hope, same purpose, and same reason for progress without insult to our town or to anyone; thus, it should be considered creative writing. Either we are surrounded by intellectual people or not, rich or poor, I consider life is beautiful. Each of one of them laid a clue of who they are as tools to navigate ourselves in a direction where we want to be.
