A Soul On Night Journey Poem by Adebayo Adekunle

A Soul On Night Journey

When all were asleep, vigil you remain
When all eyes were closed, awake yours is
When snoring played the tunes of sound sleep
While sides were turned to savour sweet dreams
Yours forsake the warmth of bed
[
Up it stood, hurriedly reaching for water
In seconds it completed the cleansing of it body
Standing like a pillar, hands raised in proclamation
Of the greatness of it lord

With sonorous voice, it recited passages from the glorious book
Patiently bending and rising
To complete the rigour of spiritual exercise

Legs became achingly weary,
Eyes itching from the escape of a temptous sleep
Weary becomes the heart seeking the divine pardon
Mercy and pleasure of it lord
While the long night journey went by
