A Sinner With A Goal Poem by yakubu abukari n

A Sinner With A Goal

I, I am a sinner par excellence by day
And a repentant Muslim at night
A repentant Muslim par excellence by day
And a sinner at night
But I, I will continue to sincerely fast and pray
Because I, I, have no intention of losing this fight
Because I, I am a sinner- one with a goal
One who is prepared to cleanse his soul
I, I know the punishment for sin
And the reward for good
Yet why do I lose more than I win?
My hungry soul thirsts for halal food.
I lose it all the time
And sometimes don’t want it back
Because of the gravity of its crime
And its surrender to Shaytan’s attack
When its belly is full with Iman
Brighter than the summer sun
I want it to remain so always
Beaming with the sun’s rays
Oh then I lose it again
Then I moan and grope in pain
Then I ask for one more chance
Before the dawn of death’s trance
Seizes my lost soul in its worldly dance
Then my wish is granted
So I wake up from my slumber
With a soul not snow white but amber
In its pitiful sorrowful state
One I very much hate
Then the struggle begins at dawn in the morn
When the blanket over me is almost torn
By the Muezzin’s sincere call to prayer
Asking me to overcome the sweet morning breeze’s flavour
So the struggle continues throughout the day
And how my soul fares, even I can’t say
So when you see me walking around
With my eyes fixed to the ground
Or quiet and alone in a pensive mood
Like a pauper without food
Remember that
I, I am a sinner par excellence by day
And a repentant Muslim at night
A repentant Muslim par excellence by day
And a sinner at night
But I, I will continue to sincerely fast and pray
Because I, I, have no intention of losing this fight
Because I, I am a sinner- one with a goal
One who is prepared to cleanse his soul
