A Single Red Rose Poem by Ginny Cadle

A Single Red Rose

Rating: 5.0

When Tom asked Georgette for a date
She made him promise not to keep her out late
Tom never wanted their dates to end
He wanted to be more than just a good friend
They put their fate in the hands of the man up above
While they fell deeper and deeper in love
When after a very happy year together in life
Tom asked Georgette to become his wife
Georgette decided on a date that Tom wouldn't forget
She chose the date they met
They were seen together everyday
She freely let his love lead the way
On their day Georgette woke to the sun in her eyes
As she got out of bed she was met with a surprise
On the mirror in red lipstick was written a note
That Tom had lovingly wrote
'My love for you will never fade
I want to add to the memories that we've made'
Lying on the dresser was a single red rose
She inhaled slowly as she raised it to her nose
Time went by and as their first anniversary got close
Tom went out and purchased a single red rose
He had it delivered on their special day
A note attached simply read, 'I love you in every way'
Every year he bought for her a single red rose
A card would be attached with loving words that Tom chose
A few months short of their 50th special day
Sadly Tom got sick and passed away
On their day a note and a single red rose was delivered
Upon opening her door her lips began to quiver
The tears fell fast as she spoke
'I can't believe someone could play such a cruel joke'
As she turned away she slammed the door
The man knocked on the door once more
She didn't care to know what this was all about
She heard him say, 'Please hear me out
Just let me explain.'
She opened the door and invited him in
She felt the need to get off her feet
She invited him to have a seat
As she listened to the deliveryman speak
A new round of tears trailed down her cheek
'About six months ago Tom came into the store
And paid in advance for a dozen more,
Red roses to be sent to you on your special day
He said that he knew he'd be going away'
After speaking, he once again held out the red rose
A single tear slowly fell as she put it to her nose
She found a note that said
'My body is gone but my spirit isn't dead
I'll never be gone
As long as you carry my memory on.'
