when I look up at the stars
I often have only one question to ask
Why the hell am I down here
And for what blessed holy task...?

Very much alike to what Rousseau said: Man is born free but everywhere he is in chains (Report) Reply

If you believe God is also metaphorical-a personification of nature, if you will-including our inner nature-then for me the poem becomes even more poignant. (Report) Reply

The phrase soul-and-body scars is thought-provoking. By hyphenating, Frost makes a single category of sufferings that are usually considered separately. (Report) Reply

the question is would you rather have had life or rather not..
not only pertains to you but also the question is for any life..
I would have to say yes..even knowing it is for a specified
time and who really wants to live forever..your body would
only fall apart eventually..so the best thing to do is enjoy
life..you may not get another one..of course you may if
God so wishes. :) (Report) Reply

This poem is a hypothetical question. Its left for the reader to make their own interpretation of it. Just like life everybody has a different way of seeing it. To me this poem means all the scars and sorrows don't measure up to the great gift of like. God gave us the gift of life and freewill. It is up to us make our own happiness. Even there are terrible experience to not take it for granted cause the gift of life outweighs all the stress and sorrows. (Report) Reply

What a question? Probably one of the hardest to answer in the cosmic world. Not sure if any of us could give an honest answer till the end but I am verging on Yes at the moment. I still don't know what's ahead, but the joys have been balanced with the terrible whippings thus far. Tai, hoping to even the score. (Report) Reply

Four lines that evoke vivid images of suffering that in turn display the inevitable struggle of every long life. Beautifully said. (Report) Reply

I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look

of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
