A Night At The Cafe Poem by Justin Gildow

A Night At The Cafe

Rating: 5.0

Walking by
It's nighttime out here
Elvis Costello and the Attractions are performing ' Everyday I Write The Book ' on my Ipod
It's been a great day so far

I stop outside a cafe
And with the way things have gone for me today
A meal inside the cafe seems the perfect way to end off a wonderful day

Walking through the door
I notice a vacant table by the window
Flowers are in a vase
And I make my way over to the vacant table

As I sit
I shut off my Ipod
I bide some time to myself
Calmly collecting my thoughts as I wait for my waitress

Inside the cafe
Business is slow
The waitresses all stand around
But they're all here tonight

I pull out a Castlevania graphic novel that I bought earlier as I wait
My waitress greets me
I put my graphic novel away
And she asks me what I want to drink
' A lemonade is fine with me '
I tell her

She leaves me for a few minutes
And she returns with my drink

She asks me what I want to eat
I say ' a chicken sandwich with potato chips '

She writes down my order
And leaves to put it in

I stare outside the window
Admiring the nighttime
I wonder if couples and other hopeless romantics are sticking it to themselves tonight

My food finally arrives
My waitress asks me if there's anything else she can do for me
But I tell here this is fine
My waitress smiles at me and leaves me soon after

I finish my meal a short while later
And my waitress returns
She takes my plate and cup away

A short while later she returns
And me and her strike up a conversation
She tells me she looks forward to the future
To many bigger and better things to come
To a day when and where she'll make something out of herself
A career and life that she wants
I tell her I just want to be happy
And that I want to enjoy life
And find many other surprises along the way on the road of life

Since I've been here tonight
The TV has shown nothing but episodes of Degrassi: The Next Generation
A few hours of hook ups, personal problems, and drama
A perfect way to end off the night

I pay for my meal
And I tip my waitress

As I leave the cafe
I stand outside
And begin my walk home
Tonight, somehow the night is strong
But I have a feeling death is a star tonight
Somewhere out here tonight

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

This was edging on prose, I liked it. Reference to ipod and such very dating...the end is what really got me-nice ending. It takes me back to leaving a bar in Minneapolis, alone-no one to escort me to my car-scary at times.

Justin I enjoyed the suspense of the journey you carried this reader on, , , I was disappointed in that I was hoping you'd connect...with the waitress...thanks for sharing Hope you get to peruse some of my work in that I need critiques from more seasoned writers...hoping to publish soon
