A Lonely Toothbrush Poem by Nick Johnson

A Lonely Toothbrush

A lonely toothbrush

by Nick Johnson

'Go it alone, you'll love it they said'..that's what they told her
I'm a lonely toothbrush, on my own, in a white toothbrush holder
I used to have a partner beside me, slender and pink
Alas now she's now standing on on someone else's sink
She gone to find a new life, more exciting she says, more eclectic
She'll soon have a new toothbrush by her side, probably blue, probably electric
Why did she leave me? I wasn't violent or abusing
We used to laugh together at things we both found amusing
I look around at other couples, the hot and cold tap..'they'll never part' he sighs..
'They'll be together forever, side by side' I utter, through envious eyes
Further afield I see other couples together, the Pepper and the Salt
I don't know why she left me, was it really my fault?
But I've got friends that will see me through, making sure I don't crack
The gels, the lotions, the bubble bath potions..they'll always have my back
The crumpled towel, the shower head, the bath and sink plugholes
The expensive shampoo, the reasonable talc, the bargain basement loo rolls
They tell me look forward, to stop waiting for retribution or some sort of severance pay
Don't look back, forget the past, stop treating this like it's Remembrance Day
I'm getting on, my bristles are soft, my colour will soon be faded
It wont be long, I'm prepared for it...I will surely soon be upgraded
Until that day comes, I'll face life full on, I've still got my dignity, my pride
Some day soon the realisation will come.... the grass isn't always greener on the other side

They say 'being alone doesn't necessarily mean that you're lonely'
They also say 'forget the past, a fresh start is good'.....if only

I'm a lonely toothbrush
