A Hole That Can'T Be Filled Poem by Jon Janson

A Hole That Can'T Be Filled

Everyone has one.
But not everyone appreciates theirs.
Some have many.
Some have mean ones who don't care.
Others have smothering ones.

The unfortunate
Don't have any.

At a certain age,
You don't need one as much.
But as a youngling that is all you need.

Your mother is your savior.
She fights dragons
And scares the monster in your closet.
Yes there are fathers
And brothers and sisters and all sorts of relatives.

But your mother is the best parts of all of them.
One kiss can heal any wound.
One word can cheer any frown.
One glance can stop you in your tracks.

At a certain age,
You don't need one as much.
Once you have your family,
Your mother plays a smaller role -
Although her glances and words have the same effect.

Not that it's easy to lose your mother at any age
But when you've scraped your knee and she swoops you up,
There's just something about that that cannot be replaced.

She's the strongest person in the world -
You know for a fact.
Yet how strong,
You haven't hardly an idea.

She fights her own battles,
With an IV in her arm and an army of doctors by her side.
She hides it from you
So that you know
You can always come to her.

When she leaves you
You don't know what to do.
Who to ask for help.
When to go to bed? !
Or maybe just a hug
In that old tattered robe
That smells like coffee
And is always warm.

Now that she's gone
You need something else.

But there is nothing else.

It's a hole that can't be filled.
You can patch and repair it,
Put some caution tape up
And a wet paint sign.
But the paint will never dry.

It's a hole that can't be filled.

You know she'd be proud of you.
Your siblings too.
It's a lovely sentiment to hear
Her old friends tell you that.

But in reality,
It means as much as tossing
A penny into a well.
It's just words coming out of someone's mouth
Who could never have known her
The way you did.

And through all this struggle,
Life's ups and downs,
All you want
Is to hear her say
I love you,
And give you a bite of her Milky Way.
