A Heart Too Big Poem by Robert Johnston

A Heart Too Big

Why must I have a heart that is too big?
Why must I attract those who don't want me,
but only what I can give them, for very little?
Is it my fate that I must love without being loved?
Is it my fate that I must care without return care?

Why must I have a heart that is too big?
I only want love, I care not for other things-
but am I truly cursed to give without receiving?
Is it my fate that I must love without being loved?
Is it my fate that I must care without return care?

Why must I have a heart that is too big?
I can never truly shut out those who want my love,
but why can't they just love me for me in return?
Is it my fate that I must love without being loved?
Is it my fate that I must care without return care?

Perhaps it is.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Folks have told me that I have too big a heart, and that I care too much.
Perhaps they are right.
