A Frog In The Well Poem by Somanathan Iyer

A Frog In The Well

A frog I was confined to a well
walls of the well I never tried to scale
few more frogs some crabs and fish
with them I presumed the whole world was in
there is nothing beyond I used to tell
my leaps and jumps I thought none could surpass
my croaks and squeaks I felt treats of music
the domain I remained made me swell with pride
resting on a rock one day I slipped into a nap
with a feel of sudden squeeze I opened my eyes
to find myself gripped in the beak of a crane
buried in fear I recalled the love of my near and dear
yet awestruck I was to see the amazing other world
the gentle breeze the passing trees the majestic hills
before me the sight was imagined never before
with unbound pleasure I started to croak(sing)
unable to enjoy dropped me down the heartless crane
immersed in my last prayers I was waiting for the end
peculiar are the ways of God in showing his grace
with a thud suddenly I reached the depths of unknown waters
by luck or prudence that was a lake looking like an ocean
swimming atop and watching the vast sheet of waters
shy I felt blaming my ignorance in understanding creation
giant fish mammoth crabs many types of frogs I noticed here
vast is the domain that I dwell and felt aghast about my folly so far
the croaks of the other frogs now appear much more musical
the sounds of the fish and the songs of the birds
awakened my wisdom in understanding the talents in others
dwarf I look in the midst of gigantic and diversified abilities
possess I a minute drop before me is the vast ocean for grabs
